Sheriff's Department

* A sleepy driver on westbound Interstate 70 reportedly caused a serious accident in the early morning of Tuesday, Nov. 6.

At 1:08 a.m. Angel Martinez Vazquez, 28, Cory, was en route to Terre Haute in a 2001 Dodge Stratus. He said he got sleepy and the next thing he remembered, he was waking as his vehicle struck something or got hit.

Abdihodzic Hidajet, 58, St. Louis, was eastbound in a 2008 Volvo tractor-trailer. He saw the Vazquez car leave the north side of the road and hit a guardrail.

The vehicle then crossed all lanes of traffic and entered Hidajet's lane of travel. He could not avoid the collision.

Vazquez's car stopped in the driving lane with massive damage. The driver was extricated from the car and transported by Operation Life for the treatment of minor bleeding at various places around his body.

Hidajet's semi came to rest along the guardrail with extensive undercarriage damage. He was out and walking and refused medical attention.

Damage was estimated at $50,001-$100,000.

* At 5:41 on Tuesday Justin L. Schroder, 33, Buckley, Ill., was southbound on U.S. 231 when his 2005 Dodge Ram suffered a mechanical failure.

A problem with the truck's rear axle caused it to leave the roadway and hit the guardrail on the west side of U.S. 231 just north of County Road 200 West.

Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.
