Tri-West downs North, South Putnam in girls three-way meet

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

South Putnam's girls' swim team kicked off the 2012-13 season by hosting North Putnam and Tri-West for a three-way meet on Monday.

The Bruins held off the hosts Eagles by a 135-128 margin, with the Cougars finishing in third.

South Putnam picked up three wins on the evening through Joslyn Farmer in the 50 free, Lyndsie Beasley in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 yard free relay team of Beasley, Farmer, Katie Shaw and Katie Hansel.

North Putnam's Elizabeth Alford placed second in both the 200 IM and 100 fly, while teammate Lyndsay Roberts took third in the 100 breaststroke.

South Putnam head coach Matthew Edwards was pleased with the result from the first meet of the season.

"We're really happy," Edwards said. "We had a lot of questions coming into this meet. We didn't know where we were or how our girls would handle the experience of a varsity meet.

"We have new swimmers, several freshmen and some of our returning swimmers are swimming new events. There was a big mix of changes for this meet.

"Things turned out great. The result was close. Last year, there was some daylight between Tri-West and ourselves. North Putnam also deserves some credit here tonight," Edwards added.

Edwards said that the assignments, handed out by assistant coach Anna Kendall, also maximized the squad's performance.

"Coach Anna sees some things in the swimmers that I don't see necessarily," he said. "The ideas for the line-up were hers and she came through for the girls. I think they paid off and it showed.

"All of our relays had really good balance. Certain swimmers had good success in certain events and the girls performed well this evening."

North Putnam head coach Tony Gray, without several swimmers Monday night, was still happy with the squad that swam.

"We're slowly growing," Gray said. "Last year, we had one returning swimmer. This year we have ten girls to start the season, though a few of them are out with injury.

"Things are looking bright, though. We've got three girls that are new and working on the different events so it's fun to watch and seem them prosper and get faster every day."

Gray said that neither the guys nor girls squad will be unknown to anyone on the schedule after last season.

"Our girls need to worry about getting faster each day and racing the stopwatch. Until we get healthy, we'll likely not be able to be in contention to win meets," Gray said. "Our guys, on the other hand, won't be sneaking up on anybody this year. Teams know that we're coming so it's going to be a challenge."
