Arlie Ray Scaggs, age 91, of Avon, formerly of Greencastle, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.

Born Sept. 19, 1921 in Kentucky, he was the son of Dee and Minnie (Blankenbeckly) Scaggs and attended Clinton Center schools.

He married Betty L. (Gibson) Scaggs on March 15, 1947, and she survives.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Arlie had retired from DePauw University in 1996, where he had worked in the maintenance department. He had previously worked at Lonestar Industries and farmed.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son, Billy Scaggs of Danville; three sisters, Jean Foxx of Greencastle, Freda Foxx of Indianapolis, and Muriel (Roy) Detro of Texas; a brother, Donnie (Betty) Scaggs of Brazil; three granddaughters, Kathleen Davis, Kelly Griffin and Kimberly Griffin; and eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Jalen, Arron, Kala, Madison, Brooke, Morgan and Jonathan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Griffin; two sisters, Anna Stringer and Mollie Robinson; and two brothers, Glen and Junior Scaggs.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Interment to follow at Brick Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 at the funeral home.
