Annual readings and carols concert presented at Gobin Methodist Church on Sunday

A long-standing tradition of music in Greencastle, begun by the late Dr. Stanley Irwin, will continue this weekend at Gobin Memorial Methodist Church.

Gregory Ristow, director of choral activities at the DePauw School of Music, will lead the DePauw University Chorus and Chamber Singers in "A Service of Readings and Carols" at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9.

The 70-minute program will celebrate the season with thoughtful pairings of readings and great classical music.

This year's service features a newly-composed organ prelude to "O Come All ye Faithful" by School of Music faculty composer Scott Perkins, recently returned from a highly acclaimed debut by the Washington National Opera of his new opera Charon at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Seasonal readings will be offered by students and local music celebrities -- including Mark McCoy, dean of the DePauw School of Music, who will read "Snow Day" by poet Billy Collins.

The audience will also have a chance to join the chorus in the singing of favorite Christmas hymns.

Admission to the annual choral concert are free. Hot chocolate will be served following the service.
