Bobcat found shot and killed in Montgomery County

CRAWFORDSVILLE (AP) -- State conservation officers in west-central Indiana are seeking the public's help in solving the fatal shooting of a state-protected bobcat.

Department of Natural Resources Cpl. Blaine Gillan says the animal's shooting was reported Thursday in Montgomery County.

A single gunshot wound to the abdomen was fatal to the 29-pound bobcat.

Bobcats are protected under state law. Gillan said a special license is required to shoot a bobcat, and only if it is a nuisance, or for scientific purposes.

Gillan says he hadn't received any reports of nuisance bobcats in the area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the DNR at 1-800-TIP-IDNR or www.in.gov/dnr.

A cash reward is offered and callers can remain anonymous.

I am sorry that it was killed, as I am for any animal but I would be the first to shoot it if it was on my property (even if I have never shot a gun).

My safety and my children's and animals safety come before any wild or endangered animal.

That is a wild animal that should all be captured and returned to a safer place other than in rural areas.
