Hansen repeats as 4-H senior entomology contest champion

The Putnam County 4-H Career Development Event team from Greencastle fared well in the State 4-H/FFA Entomology Contest on Dec. 8 at Purdue University.

Team members are: Amanda Beals, Gayle Baugh, Luke Norris, Kelly Hansen and Beth Ann Hansen all from Greencastle. Gayle Hansen of Greencastle coaches the local team.

In the 4-H senior division, Beth Ann Hansen took first place for the second consecutive year. The winner of the senior division receives a four-day educational trip to Washington, D.C., with other Indiana 4-H'ers.

The junior level Putnam County Ants team, consisting of Amanda Beals, Luke Norris, Kelly Hansen and Gayle Baugh, placed third in the junior division.

Individual honors went to Amanda Beals for third-place individual, Luke Norris as eighth-place individual and Kelly Hansen for 11th-place individual.

The Putnam Couny Ants 4-H judging team won the honor of judging at the state competition by placing first in the Area 4-H Entomology Career Development Event in November. At the area contest Luke Norris was first-place junior individual and Beth Ann Hansen was first-place senior individual.

Career Development Events are designed to encourage youth to learn all they can about a specific topic.

Hansen is also shown displaying her individual award.

In entomology they learn to identify insect specimens. They must also complete a quiz on insects. Youth practice the skills of observation, analysis, and communication skills they will use their entire lives. Youth also enjoy the fun, teamwork and competition of Career Development judging events.

There are more than a dozen different competitions where 4-H'ers may participate in career development events.
