Tigers break streak with win over K-college

Thursday, December 20, 2012

The DePauw men's basketball squad broke a three-game losing streak by downing Kalamazoo, 76-46, on faculty, staff and senior citizens appreciation day at Neal Fieldhouse.

After a dismal shooting performance two days earlier against Rose-Hulman, DePauw shot 57.9 percent from the floor to run the Hornets out of the gym.

"Offensively we were more patient today," DePauw head coach Bill Fenlon said. "Our energy was very good out there after a few tough losses. This was the way we needed to play coming into the holiday break before we gear back up for the Tampa Bay Shootout."

The Tigers never trailed in the contest after tying the game at two only 30 seconds into the game.

Throughout the first half, DePauw was able to assert its will and led by double-digits throughout. With just over two minutes to play, Kalamazoo cut the lead to nine on a layup by Eric Fishman, prompting Fenlon to call timeout.

Out of the pause, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to end the half, capitalized by a deep Kevin Sullivan trey to put DePauw up 20 heading into the break.

The second half was more of the same as the Tigers controlled every facet of the game, leading to a 76-46 final score.

Senior forward Barry Flynn led the Tigers with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while sophomore guard Connor Rich chipped in 11 points.

Mark Ghafari was the Hornets' lone double-digit scorer with 14 points.

DePauw held the Hornets to just 34 percent shooting from the floor and held a 40-20 rebounding edge.

The Tigers return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 29, when they take on Connecticut College at 5 p.m. in the Tampa, Fla.
