Jim was an avid woodworker. He built two homes that he and his wife lived in, and each child has a piece of furniture that Jim hand-crafted. Some of the unique pieces of furniture that he made were full-scale log dollhouses and Thomas the Train tables.

He enjoyed NASCAR, especially Jimmy Johnson; gardening, darts and playing cards. He taught each of his children how to play cards, and really enjoyed playing Pinochle. He enjoyed Westerns, especially with John Wayne.

The most important part of Jim's life was spending time with his family.
