Mount Zion Baptist Church tutoring program to begin

The Mount Zion Baptist Church tutoring program recently began its inaugural session.

The program, the brainchild of Helen Webb, a long time resident of Putnam County and former resident of the Greencastle NAACP chapter, is designed to support the efforts of parents and educators by providing additional support to area students.

The program will offer homework help and enrichment activities designed to promote critical and creative thinking.

"All too often parents are telling me that their children are struggling," Webb said. "Maybe it's math or reading. Whatever it is, the child is thinking of learning as an impossible task. We don't think it should be that way. Learning should be fun and exciting."

In that spirit, Mount Zion Pastor Kirk B. Williams and church members decided to launch the tutoring program. Mount Zion tutoring will provide educational games and opportunities for students to explore various interests and learn new skills.

"We've lined up a gentleman to teach chess for example," Webb said.

Educational games will keep students using brain power even when they are not working on academics. To the question "When will I use this?" Tutoring program founders have the answer, "All the time. Let us show you."

The Mount Zion Baptist tutoring program welcomes all students in grades K-12. The program will continue though the school year, the program will run Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, located at 802 Crown St. in Greencastle.

A snack will also be provided.

In related news, Mount Zion Baptist Church will present its Martin Luther King Day program on Sunday at 11 a.m. DePauw student and minister Fred Reed will speak. Dinner will follow the program.

On Sunday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. Mount Zion Baptist will present its Black History Month program, also with a dinner to follow.
