IHSAA announces new athletic sectionals for 2013-14 school year

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced in February that several local schools would be playing in a different class-size. On Monday the sectional pairings were announced.

For the majority of sports, Greencastle will compete in 3A as a member of Sectional 27. This includes Beech Grove, Danville, Indian Creek and Tri-West and applies to boys' basketball, baseball, girls' basketball and softball.

In football, Greencastle is in 3A Sectional 29, along with Brebeuf, Crawfordsville, Edgewood, North Montgomery, Tri-West, West Vigo and Western Boone.

For volleyball, Greencastle remains in 3A sectional 28, along with Brown County, Edgewood, Northview, Owen Valley and West Vigo.

Greencastle is in Sectional 50 in boys' soccer, along with Bethesda Christian, Cascade, Indiana Math and Science and Tri-West.

In girls' soccer, the Tiger Cubs will compete in sectional 44, which includes Cascade, Crawfordsville, North Montgomery, Southmont, Tri-West, Western Boone and North Putnam.

The Cougars will compete in sectional 49 in boys' soccer, which includes Covington, South Vermillion and West Vigo.

North Putnam will be dropped from 3A to 2A in most other sports, commonly paired with both South Putnam and Cloverdale.

The three county schools are each in 2A Sectional 44 in volleyball, boys' basketball, girls' basketball, baseball and softball. The remaining teams in Sectional 44 of these sports are Cascade, Covenant Christian, Monrovia and Speedway.

Five of the six teams currently competing in the West Central Conference will now be competing in the same sectional as well.

The exception to this is football, where each county school will now be in a different sectional.

For football, North Putnam will be moved to 2A Sectional 35. The other schools include Benton Central, Cass, Delphi, Lafayette Catholic Central, Southmont, Taylor and Tipton.

Cloverdale moved up from 1A to 2A in football and will now compete in Sectional 37. This group includes WCC rivals Cascade and Monrovia, Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, Indianapolis Washington, Park Tudor, South Vermillion and Speedway.

South Putnam football appears to be the biggest local beneficiary of the remapped sections.

The Eagles' football team drops from 2A to 1A and will now be match up in Sectional 46. This includes Edinburgh, Indianapolis Howe Academy, Indianapolis Lutheran, North Decatur, South Decatur, Trinity Lutheran and West Washington.

The sectional pairings will take effect for next school year, meaning postseason play coming up at the end of this month will go by the old sections.

The tournament draw for softball will be revealed on Thursday, May 9, for girls' tennis on Monday, May 13 and for baseball on Tuesday, May 14.
