PCPL board welcomes two new members

The Putnam County Public Library Board welcomed two new members, Alan Zerkel and Tona Gardner, during its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening.

Zerkel, currently the principal at North Putnam High School, comes to the Library Board after being appointed by the Putnam County Commissioners.

Gardner was appointed to the library board after being appointed by the Putnam County School Board Presidents. She currently works at South Putnam High School.

Among the issues discussed during Wednesday's meeting was the children's room renovation.

The board heard a presentation from Matthew R. Mayol and Debra S. Sparks of Odle McGuire and Shook (OMS), the company the board recently agreed to go with for the renovation.

OMS has recently undergone six library projects, including Monroe County Library, Shelby County Public Library, Lebanon Public Library, Peabody Public Library and the Indiana University Medical Research Library.

The board had recently discussed several ideas for the children's room, which included adding a new dramatic entry, new finishes, furniture and lighting, an additional office, redesigning the outdoor space and better storage.

Both Mayol and Sparks also talked about defining a teen area with new finishes, furniture, lighting, signs and shelving.

The proposed scope of work by OMS for the children's room carries an estimated cost of $65,000-$96,000.
