PCPL continues improvements

The Putnam County Public Library Board met for its monthly meeting Wednesday evening to discuss computer issues as well as the children's renovation.

The library previously approved the purchase of eight new HP Compaq 6300 Pro computers to replace the outdated ones throughout the library. However, following the installation, it was noted that they were not running properly.

"The computers were acting consistently slow and we finally figured it out that maybe it had to do with the filtering software," said interim director Pat Newman "We looked into it and we found out that ENA, our internet provider, can give us filtering for free."

The library successfully switched over to ENA for the filtering. However, System Administrator George Edenfield is still going to have to go through the process of converting each of the library's computers.

"He's been methodically going through," Newman added. "It hasn't been on long enough to tell whether it's going to speak to the system."

Board President Nancy Zennie also gave a brief update on the status of the children's room.

Zennie came before the board to seek approval for the purchase of several new items that are needed in the children's room that go along with the renovation, but are also needed for Leslie Stimpert, the new early childhood librarian.

Among the items that were approved to be purchased were shelving, drying racks, dress up cupboard, a play kitchen, a tool set and more.

"The Children's Department would like to purchase these items so they can get the new assistant up and running," Zennie noted. "We want to provide anything to her that would facilitate her doing her job. This is part of the renovation, there's nothing new or unexpected."

The council approved the children's department for a total of $30,000, with the shelving taking up the majority with it being $21,896.

The board also approved the 2014 budget.

The next library board meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.
