'Touch-a-Truck' fundraiser set for Saturday at GHS lot

Sunday, June 8, 2014

Local residents are invited to "rev up your imagination" for the Friends of the Putnam County Public Library's second annual Touch a Truck event.

Touch a Truck is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at the Greencastle High School lower parking lot.

Touch a Truck provides an opportunity for children to explore vehicles of all types -- public service, emergency, utility, construction and transportation -- all in one place.

Children will be allowed to touch, climb on and ask questions about their favorite vehicles in a safe, supervised environment. Accompanying personnel will teach the children about the equipment displayed and how these machines help us and our community.

The event cost is $5 per person or $15 for a family of four. All funds raised will support Imagination Library in Putnam County.

Tickets for the event will be for sale the day of the event. To purchase tickets in advance, persons may contact 720-7610 or visit the Putnam County Public Library.

In addition, several prizes will be raffled off at this year's event, including a remote-control car, a train set and die-cast vehicles with some prizes valued at more than $250.

Participating in this year's event are: Baker's Septic, Jerry Butts, Cardinal, Cash Concrete, Caterpillar Inc., Co-Alliance, Crown Equipment, Duke Energy, Greencastle Community School Corporation, Greencastle Department of Public Works, Greencastle Fire Department and Greencastle Police Department.

Also scheduled to take part are Matt Helmer, Humphrey's Outdoor Power, Laura Kopetsky Tri-ax, Wes McClara Racing, One Source Lafayette, Pingleton Sawmill, Putnam County Highway Department, Putnam County Public Library, Putnam County Sheriff's Department, RHS, Dustin Shoulders and Travis Shoulders Racing, Jason Thomas Racing, UPS, Wal-Mart Transportation, Jim York, 4-H Horse and Pony Club, 4K Farms and others.

Imagination Library was started by country signer Dolly Parton and is a program that provides a new and free, age-appropriate book every month to each child enrolled in the program.

A sample of book titles that have recently been sent to local Putnam County children include: "Llama, Llama Red Pajama," "The Little Engine That Could," "Ferdinand" and "Corduroy."

Any Putnam County child age birth to five may sign up for the program. For more information about Imagination Library in Putnam County persons may visit http://www.putnam.lib.in.us/joomla/index.php/pcpl-imagination-library or the Putnam County Public Library.

Currently, about 700 Putnam County children are enrolled in Imagination Library and are receiving a free book each month.

The Friends of the Putnam County Public Library is sponsoring the Touch A Truck event. The group's mission is to promote literacy, the love of reading, and the freedom to read by supporting the Library with money, moral support, programs, and volunteer service.

The Friends of the Library currently support the following programs: reading programs: Halloween free book program; Imagination Library; events and speakers; promotional items; quarterly library newsletter design, printing and mailing; and staff development.

This year all promotional artwork for the Touch a Truck event was done by local Greencastle High School Digital Design students, Breanna Burnham, Sierra Herald, Hailey Johnson, Hillary Johnson, Conner Nodley and Karina Serapio under the supervision of Dr. Robin Johnson.
