Dewey Burkhart, 80, Elberfeld, Ind., died Saturday at Evansville.

Born in Bowman, Ind., he was the son of Quillis and Delta Mae Burkhart.

A World War II veteran, he received several medals including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, awarded by Gen. George Patton. He retired from Peabody Coal Co. in 1989 and was a member of the United Mine Workers.

He married Earlena Hedges on June 25, 1949. She survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Burl Burkhart, Princeton, and Lester Burkhart, Connersville; two sisters, Carolyn Ray, Princeton, and Linda West, Union; a son, Richard Burkhart, Guam; two daughters, Vicki Suzanne Williams and husband Phil, Greencastle, and Sherry Oxley, Tennyson; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gifford Burkhart and Don Burkhart, and sister Imogene Lindy.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Fellowship Church, Evansville, with Rev. Spencer Downs officiating. Burial will be in Northview Cemetery, Elberfeld.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home, Oakland City.
