Clelland J. Hanner, 88, Bloomingdale, died Monday evening in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born in Rosedale, he was the son of James O. and Gertrude (Britton) Hanner.

A graduate of Marshall High School, Indiana State University and Notre Dame Law School, he practiced law in Rockville for 58 years, first with his father and later with sons James and Gary. He was elected prosecutor in 1948, and gained national attention in 1977 in the prosecution and conviction of the "Hollandsburg Murders."

A World War II veteran, he enlisted in 1944 after a teaching stint in Montezuma. A B-17 and B-24 pilot, he completed 30 missions and was awarded the air medal with three clusters and distinguished flying cross.

He was a member of Marshall Federated Church, Bloomingdale Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, Rockville Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge of Clinton, American Legion Fellenzer Post 48, VFW Post 1752 and Amvets Post 61, Rockville.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Alice Bledsoe Hanner; daughter Barbara Earl and husband Neil, Bloomingdale; sons, James Hanner and wife Faith, Bloomingdale, Bradley Hanner and wife Emily, Holland, Ind., Gary Hanner and wife Mary, Rockville, and Joe Hanner and wife Linda, Marshall; brother Harold Hanner, Rockville; sister Irma Newton, Rockville; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by brothers Francis and Jay Hanner, and a grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gooch Funeral Home, Rockville, with Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Marshall, with military graveside honors.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to services Thursday.
