Dorothy Lorene Toney, 89, Fillmore, and Sun City, Ariz., died Thursday at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Born in Fillmore, she was the daughter of Chester Burl and Emma Ethel (Hunter) Ruark.

A 1934 graduate of Fillmore High School, she was a 1937 graduate of Indianapolis City Hospital School of Nursing. She was also a member of New Providence Baptist Church, and an associate member of First Christian Church in Sun City.

She was a nurse for many years, concluding her career by serving 13 years as director of nursing at Putnam County Hospital, retiring in 1981. She had been a member of West Marion Home Demonstration Club, Good Chair Club, Rebecca Lodge, and a past president of the county extension homemakers.

After retiring, she wintered in Arizona with her husband. She was a member of the R.N. Club of Arizona, Sun City china painting club, Desert Cactus Brushes, Bell Craft Club, Tip Top Tap Dancer's Club and wa a 12-year member of the Sun City Prides. She had enrolled in tap dancing classes at age 81.

She married Frank Toney on July 15, 1939. He died Aug. 20, 1995.

Surviving are a son, Darrell D. Toney and wife Barbara, Fillmore; a daughter, Barbara Anne Toney, Colorado, Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, three brothers, a sister and an infant sister.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. James Moore officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.
