Fennell selected for GCSC board

A new member will be seated on the Greencastle School Board following a vote of the Greencastle City Council on Tuesday.

Monica Fennell was selected to replace two-term member Barbara Bryan as the council's representative to the appointed school board.

The council interviewed both candidates for the position prior to the regular council session. Councilman John Lanie made the motion to approve Fennell as the school board member for the next term. Councilman Bob Sedlack added a second to bring the motion to discussion and a vote.

"I think Barb did a good job for the last two terms," Sedlack said, "but I think it's important to bring someone with a new perspective to the board."

Also voting in favor of Fennell were councilmen Russ Evans and Tom Roach.

However, councilman Mark Hammer said he did not see a point in replacing Bryan. He questioned the method of voting, noting that four years ago the council voted for the individuals with a show of hands rather than through a motion.

Hammer said his vote of no was not a vote against Fennell, but a vote for Bryan.

"I don't want to vote no for Monica, but yes for Barb," Hammer said.

The council vote stood at 4-1 in favor of Fennell.

The new board member will take her seat in July.

Fennell is an attorney in Greencastle. She is married to DePauw University assistant professor David Gellman, and is the mother of two children.
