Chamber sets open house

The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its recent move a block south with an open house from 4-7 p.m., June 22. The public is invited to the event which will include appetizers, door prizes, a cash bar and tours.

The thought of moving the location of the group, whose job it is to promote business in the greater Greencastle area, had been in the works for quite some time, but in May, it became official.

The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce moved from its previous location, the Putnam County Partnership Center, 2 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, just down the street on May 22.

The Chamber of Commerce now occupies the first floor on 16 S. Jackson St., Greencastle, a building owned by Touchstone Realty Advisors.

"We're thrilled," Chamber Executive Director Tammy Amor told the BannerGraphic on Tuesday. "We've had a lot of people stop by and say, 'hey, I didn't know you moved.'"

The new building features more space, as the Chamber grew out of its previous space at the Partnership Center.

"This allows us space to grow," Amor said. "We just outgrew it."

Amor said the Chamber started discussions of moving out the Partnership Center in December. A decision to look for a new location was made earlier this year.

At the Chamber of Commerce's February meeting, 18 of the 19-person board voted in favor of the move. Board member Lauri Robertson-Hard-wick abstained due to conflict.

The chamber now has access to the entire left side of the first floor of the building. In addition, the chamber previously shared a board room with other agencies at the Partnership Center but now has its own, included with a Plasma Television set hanging on the wall in the board room.

Signs are now posted in front of the building displaying the chamber logo. Amor said Taylor-Made Enterprises put up the signs.

She added inmates at the Putnam County Community Corrections helped with the move.

"You kind of want to get the glitches out of the way before the open house," Amor said. "That takes a while."

Amor said there are still two offices on the first floor that are for rent and others on the top floor of the building.

In addition, she said the chamber wanted to thank Cottage Gardens, Cull-igan Water Conditioning, DePauw Uni-versity, Duke Energy, HOP Technologies, Shuee and Sons TV and Appliances, and Walnut Creek Construction for their efforts with the move.

Bingo McCoy's Rockhouse Pub and Grill occupies the basement of the building.

The building was previously the national headquarters of the Society of Professional Journalism.

The chamber had been housed in the Partnership Center since 1990.

It also houses the Greencas-tle/Putnam County Deve-lopment Center, Main Street Greencastle, the Putnam County Community Foun-dation, the United Way of Putnam County, and the Visiting Nurse Service, Inc., of Putnam County.
