Field Day gives young 4-H'ers experience along with fun

Projects, pledges, songs and animals, oh my. It was Exploring 4-H Field Day at the Putnam County Fairgrounds Thursday, and second-graders from across the county came to the fairgrounds to learn about 4-H and how they are able to participate.

The 4-H Junior Leaders started out the day leading the explorers in the Pledge of Allegiance and teaching the 4-H pledge. The youngsters also learned the silly but fun 4-H songs that all past 4-H members will remember. (You know, "The Grand Ol' Duke of York, he had a thousand men ...")

Junior Leaders introduced five projects to the groups. These projects included wildlife, collections, photography, foods, and drawing. Groups received information packets on how they could create their own projects and what guidelines they needed to follow.

The children were later divided up to go to different stations throughout the community buildings, beef barn and the show arena. These stations were family nutrition program led by Julie Jimenez, agricultural and natural resources led by Ann Delchambre, tie-dying t-shirts, snacks and learning about livestock animals.

The groups were introduced to rabbits, chickens, goats, a horse and a cow. The groups were given an opportunity to talk with 4-H'ers about the animal, ask any questions about raising or showing, and they could pet the animals, except for the cow.

The Exploring 4-H program along with Field Day, encourages Putnam County youths to join in the 4-H program. To enroll in 4-H next year, all enrollment forms are due April 12, 2007.
