Past, present students recogn ized by board

Friday, August 18, 2006

Current and former North Putnam High School students received certificates of recognition Thursday night during the North Putnam School board meeting.

Supt. Murray Pride informed the board that the accomplishments these students made were during the spring and summer months.

Jake Mullis, a senior pitcher for the Cougars, received a certificate for being a member of the 2006 All State baseball team. According to Pride, Mullis was one of two pitchers named on that team.

During the FFA competition this summer, two teams representing North Putnam competed in the food science career development. One team was named the state champion team. This team consisted of Jessica Fry, Mackenzie Pearson, Kristen Fry, and Ashley Summerlot. The other team received second place, and consisted of Mindy Fordice, Ashley Pinney, Eric Earley, and Ethan Stephenson.

"We appreciate all your hard work and dedication," said Pride of the recipients. "And thanks to all the parents, the sponsors, and the coaches. Congratulations."

During his report, Pride informed the board that while the corporation does not worry about the number of students for the first three days, he did ask for numbers Wednesday to give the board an idea as to where they are. "As of right now, we have 1,856 students that would make up the ADM report," said Pride. The acutal number of students in the buildings are 1,921, which is 10 students short from where the corporation was last year. But this is not the final number.

Pride also said the corporation had some timing problems with the buses and students getting on the wrong bus. "We were 30 minutes late getting the kids loaded at the high school and getting the elementary kids onto the buses and to the schools," said Pride.

Pride did say that they have made adjustments and that the time is decreasing each day.

All-in-all it was a good start, Pride said.

The elementary schools did have a couple of problems with parents requesting their children be transferred to a different school. Policy 6221, parent requested school transfer, states that school corporation has established student attendance boundaries for each elementary school, and students residing within each boundary are expected to attend their designated school.

According to policy 6221, a request to transfer must be for one or more of the following reasons, including a move into the requested school area is pending and can be documented, the student has been attending the requested school and wished to finish out the year (this applies only to fifth graders), and attendance at the requested school is in the best educational interest of the student.

The school's prinicpal can take away the school transfer at any time if any of following occur, including poor attendance, tardiness, and poor behavior lack of academic effort.
