Friendship Day set for Sept. 13

Monday, August 21, 2006

Friendship Day, formerly known as Good Neighbor Day, is set for Wednesday, Sept. 13.

The annual event - sponsored by Eitel's Flowers and Gifts, the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Asbury Towers Retirement Community, Old National Bank and Ivy Tech Community College - is intended to spread friendship, smiles and community spirit among Putnam County citizens.

Approximately 4,000 bright colored roses will be given away by the dozen. There is one condition though.

Participants can keep one rose for themselves, but must give the other 11 away to different people.

Event sponsors are requesting that people drop off a canned food item when they pick up their free roses.

The canned items will be donated to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry.

"This is just one more small way that we can make a difference for our neighbors," said Tammy Amor, executive director of the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.

Anyone unable to bring a canned good is still able to receive a dozen roses to pass out to new friends.

Each year the roses disappear faster, so the sponsors advise everyone to come as early as they can - before all the roses are gone.

The roses will be available at five different locations beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The locations are Eitel's Flowers and Gifts on Vine Street, the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce on Jackson Street, Asbury Towers on Poplar Street, the downtown branch of Old National Bank, and Ivy Tech Community College on Calbert Way.
