Greencastle's girls emerged from overtime with a hard-fought 41-39
victory over Cascade in a West Central Conference basketball game Friday at the McAnally Center.
"It's huge for us," Greencastle Coach Glen Hile said. "Cascade is a good
team. We've felt like we've beaten the teams we should have this year, but
haven't beaten teams that have had a better record than us. We just wanted to
beat what we considered a pretty good team. We're tickled to have won it."
Greencastle (8-10, 2-2 WCC) and Cascade (7-9, 3-2 WCC) were tied at the
end of regulation, 34-34.
The Tiger Cubs pulled out to a 38-34 lead in overtime on Kyrian
Marshall's basket from in close after being fed by Laura Weatherford. Weatherford followed with a breakaway layup after Greencastle created a turnover.
Cascade's Kate Miller made a 3-pointer with 2:31 to cut its deficit to
three.
After Marshall made 1-of-2 free throws 11 seconds later, Cascade tied the
game at 39 on Melissa English's 12-foot jumper.
Greencastle regained the lead on Lauren Robertson's free throw with 37.1
seconds remaining. Robertson's second attempt was short, but it bounced long
and Robertson grabbed the rebound. It was her second crucial rebound in the
final two minutes. She had grabbed a missed Greencastle shot to keep possession and allow the Tiger Cubs to run the clock down before going to the foul line.
Stefanie Masten made a free throw with 7.4 seconds to lift Greencastle to a 41-39 lead.
Cascade called time out and in-bounded the ball in the front court. Masten stepped between two defenders to intercept a pass and seal the victory.
Masten had also made the Greencastle's most important basket in
regulation. Down by two, she netted a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to give the Tiger Cubs the lead.
"That three-pointer by Stefanie was huge," Hile said.
Cascade's Stewart was fouled shooting with one tenth of a second on the clock. She tied the game by converting the first free throw, but missed the second.
"We were just dang lucky she missed," Hile said.
Masten had 16 points and seven rebounds and Marshall had 11 rebounds, seven points and three blocked shots.
Hile was particularly pleased with the play of sophomore guard Grace
Fisher, who had seven points and four rebounds.
"Grace Fisher played a great game," Hile said. "She got us going with her
two steals and lay-ups off of them. This is a game she will remember for how
well she played."
