CRAWFORDSVILLE -- Alys Moore won the 100-yard breaststroke and was a member of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay team Saturday to lead Greencastle to second place in the girls swimming Sectional at Crawfordsville High School.

The Tiger Cubs had several other strong performances, including second-places by Kendi Thomas in the 200-yard free and 500-yard free, Kelsey Murtagh in the 100-yard backstroke and in the 200-yard medley relay.

Greencastle seriously challenged Crawfordsville for the team title, but fell 24 points short, 285-261. It was the fourth straight Sectional championship for the Athenians.

"We swam very well," Tiger Cubs' coach Emilie Bowman said. "We got close in the middle (of the 12-event competition), but Crawfordsville had too much depth for us to come back. We knew coming in we'd have to swim our best and Crawfordsville would have to be only good and it swam great and we swam real well."

Moore and Greencastle's 200-yard free and 200-yard medley relay teams advanced to Friday's preliminaries in the state meet at the IUPUI Natatorium. Sectional winners advance automatically. Greencastle's medley relay team of Thomas, Murtagh, Moore and Erica Soster was second, by .04 of a second, to Crawfordsville and reached the state meet based upon its time being in the top 32 in Sectional competition. Greencastle's 1:52.36 was 27th.

Moore, a senior, swam a career-best 1:09.97 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

'It was a great swim,' Bowman said. 'She only missed the school record by one-hundredth of a second. Her goal had been to break 1:10 and this is her last year. It's a great way to go out.'

Thomas was the top seed in the 200 and also had the fastest time in Thursday's preliminaries. The senior swam a season-best 2:02.69 in the finals, but Crawfordsville's Sarah Howland posted a career-best 2:01.67 to win. Thomas was also the second seed in the 500 and swam a season-best 5:29.66 in the finals.

Southmont freshman Hilary Mishler won easily in 5:12.35.

'Kendi had two solid swims,' Bowman said. 'She was a little disappointed in herself, but she swam well.'

Murtagh, a freshman, was also third in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.79, setting a school record in the process. She swam 1:01.29 in the 100 back and broke her own school record. Murtagh was fourth in the 100 fly and third in the 100 back in the preliminaries.

Bowman was pleased that Murtagh performed well when it counted most.

'You're never sure what they're going to do when they're freshmen,'

Bowman said. 'She swam really well.'

North Putnam's Randi Alles closed out her high school career with seconds

in the 50 and 100 frees. She swam season bests of 25.26 seconds in the 50 and

56.24 in the 100.

Moore was also fourth in the 200 individual medley. Teammate Morgan Terry was fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 free.

Soster was fifth in the 50 and 100 frees, Jackie Cantonwine was seventh in

the 100 back and ninth in the 500 free, Jamie Grivas was eighth in the 200

free and 100 fly, Jeanette Jones was eighth in the 100 breast and 200 I.M.,

Erica Collins was ninth in the 100 free and Ashley Allred was 10th in the 50 and 100 frees for the Tiger Cubs.

In addition to Moore, Murtagh, Soster and Thomas swam on the 200 free relay team.
