Pingleton's season comes to an end

INDIANAPOLIS -- Chris Pingleton's dream of getting a state wrestling medal will have to wait until next season.

The Greencastle High School junior lost his first round match with Hanover Central's Mike Sands by a 5-3 decision. Sands took an early lead in the match, getting Pingleton on his back for a near fall. Pingleton scored on Sands when he got a take down midway through the second period, but was unable to cut the lead anymore.

"Chris's match was an unusual match," GHS Coach Russ Hesler said. "You don't see many near fall points scored in the first period. I have never seen points scored first for a near fall."

Pingleton finished the season with a 45-2 record with both losses coming in the post season. He might be done for the school season, but Pingleton has every intention of continuing to practice for next year.

"The record's not bad, but I plan on continuing practice," Pingleton said.

Pingleton isn't the only one expecting him to continue to practice.

"Most kids would be happy with a 45-2 record and it's a good record, but Chris isn't satisfied," Hesler said. "Next year's season starts for Chris (Friday).

"Most kids would quit and give up after achieving a record like Chris has, but not Chris. He finished in the top 16 in the state in his weight class and to lose medal by a few points is tough, but the good news he will be back next year," Hesler said.
