Friday, February 17, 2006

Former South Putnam High School basketball standout Molly Williams will be honored today.

Williams No. 40 jersey will be retired in her memory today at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. Williams' number will be the first-ever women's basketball player number retired at Limestone College.

She died in early September 2005 and was a member of the 2006 graduating class. She is being awarded an honorary Bachelor of Science degree that will be given to her parents at graduation this spring.

In her short time at Limestone, Williams made a huge impact to the program. She currently sits in 10th for best free throw in a single season and seventh in rebounds.

"Molly was an outstanding person, she was just a pleasure to be around," LC Coach Cory Fox said.

Williams was an honorary captain on the team this year. In her first season at Limestone, she played in 26 games, starting 17. She averaged eight points per game, accumulating a career total of 207 points, shooting 46.5 percent from the field on 72-of-155. She also shot 63-for-93 from the free throw line for 67.7 percent while grabbing 202 rebounds for the season, averaging 7.8 per game.

"She was a very hard worker on the court and would try to do everything I asked of her," Fox said. "We miss her everyday. It was an honor for me to know and coach Molly Williams."

Williams graduated from South Putnam High School where she was four-year letterman in three different sports and was the recipient of the Greencastle Greater Chamber of Commerce All-Putnam County Player of the Year.

She had a career total of 968 points, ranking her fourth all-time at the school. She graduated from SPHS in the spring of 2002 before attending Danville Community College in Illinois, before transferring to Limestone.
