Girls All-County basketball team selected

For the second year in a row, Jessica Canary topped the All-County Girls Basketball team for 2006 as the BannerGraphic All-County Player of the Year.

Canary finished her senior season with 381 points, bringing her total career points to 1,247. With a total of 1,247 points, Canary passed Rene McKinney's record of 1,101 points and became South Putnam's all-time leading scorer.

Canary averaged 17.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 4.9 assist's this past season and led the Eagles to the championship game of the Cascade Sectional. She was a constant force on the team this year and demanded everyone's attention when she was on the floor.

There were a total of eight players that made the team this year and each one was picked solely by the BannerGraphic on end of the season statistics and performance throughout the year.

Among the other seven players that made the team this year is Meghan Canary, the younger sister of Jessica and the only other Eagle to make the team this year.

Meghan averaged 11.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest and was side-by-side with her sister this season in leading the Eagles' offense in the 2005-06 season. When Jessica wasn't on the floor, Meghan took control of the team and the offense.

There were two players from Greencastle that made the team this year and were seniors. Stefanie Masten and Kyrian Marshall, the only two seniors on the Greencastle team this year, led the young Tiger Cub team in their final days at Greencastle to earn a spot on the All-County team.

Masten led the Tiger Cubs offense this year, averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field. She also averaged 8.2 rebounds per contest this year. Masten was the offensive leader for the Tiger Cubs, but Marshall was the backbone of the defense. She averaged 10.8 rebounds and four blocked shots per game in the 2005-06 season, along with scoring 7.9 points per game.

Cloverdale High School had two representatives on the All-County team this year in Hannah Monnett and Ashley Koosman. Monnett and Koosman were the two leading scorers on the Clovers team this year, averaging 12 points a game each. Along with doing the majority of the scoring for Cloverdale, Monnett and Koosman played their share of defense as well. Koosman led the team in rebounding, averaging nearly nine boards a game while Monnett pulled down around 7.5 rebounds per contest and tallied 61 assists for the year, averaging three a game.

The final two girls that round off the 2006 BannerGraphic All-County team were from North Putnam, Laura Blaydes and Brook Miller. Blaydes led the Cougars this year, averaging 16.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season. Miller averaged 7.7 points per game, but totaled 68 assists this season, giving her an average of just over three per game.
