Clovers fall to Miners in opener

Friday, March 31, 2006

Without getting a single hit, the Linton High School baseball team moved its record to 1-1 with a 6-2 win over the Cloverdale Clovers Wednesday.

The Clovers pitchers walked the Miners 14 times in the loss.

"The one thing that you need to learn early on is to put pressure on the defense even if it means taking off the pitcher," LHS Coach Bart Berns said. "We didn't get any runs, but we're the kind of team that takes things one day at a time and we still have a lot of things to work on."

The Clovers took an early lead in the bottom of the second when Chase Haltom singled, bringing in Brandon Mescall, but Linton bounce back in the beginning of the third inning, scoring three runs.

One came when Cloverdale's pitching loaded the bases and walked one in and the other two were from Franky Busby, who sacrificed one into right field, bringing in Tim Leffler and Jeff Laughlin for the scores.

zThe Miners had their last three runs walked in by McCammon.

The Clovers scored one more run before the end when Haltom singled again for another run batted in, bringing in Craig Blair. Cloverdale tried but could not come back for the win.

"Coming into (Wednesday), I thought our pitching and fielding would be there. I wasn't sure about our hitting, but I thought our pitching would be there," CHS Coach Tim Savini said. "This was a bad way to lose, because we don't know if they were good or not because we walked them to much."

McCammon earned the loss for the Clovers, while striking out five Miners and allowing four runs all of which were earned. Blair fanned out six Miners for the night and gave up two earned runs.

Busby, who went the entire game for Linton, and earned the win while striking out five and giving up five hits and two runs.

"Busby did a good job for us on the mound (Wednesday)," Berns said.

The Clovers hitting was led by Haltom, who two singles while McCammon and Michael Neese had one single each. Kyle Schroer had a double.
