Cougars take second straight over Greencastle

The North Putnam Cougars are 2-0 after defeating Greencastle for the second day in a row.

The Cougars defeated the Tiger Cubs 6-2 at home Wednesday behind a strong starting performance from sophomore Kyle Rooker.

Rooker struck out four and gave up just three hits in six innings of work. He gave up just one earned run in the game. Rooker had a decent day at the plate, going 1-for-3 and picking up an RBI in the bottom of the second when he popped out to centerfield, enabling Jordan Berry to make the trip home, making it a 2-0 game.

Derrick Patterson, Rooker's counterpart on the mound, didn't have an especially good day. He also went six innings but gave up all 11 of North Putnam's hits as well as all six of the Cougars' runs, all earned.

It was clear that the day would belong to North Putnam in the bottom of the first, as Jake Mullis sent Patterson's second pitch over the right field fence to put the Cougars on top 1-0 early.

Mullis had a monster day at the plate for North Putnam, going 3-for-4 on the day. He tallied an RBI as well as two runs against the Tiger Cubs.

The Tiger Cubs were defeated by North Putnam on Tuesday, 8-3, after Mullis pitched six innings.

North Putnam would score another two in the bottom of the second before finishing off their offensive run in the fourth inning with another three runs.

Mullis, Levi Elliott and Brayden Dahlstrom all crossed the plate for North Putnam in the inning.

Greencastle's first run came in the top of the fifth inning when Kendall Faust was knocked in by Patterson, who hit a double to bring. The Tiger Cubs scored their second run in the seventh inning on an RBI pop fly from Zac Remsburg that brought Michael Richardson home.

It wasn't enough, though, as Shelby Reed, pitching in relief of Rooker, managed to retire the side and put the Tiger Cubs away for the series.

Greencastle struggled at the plate for the second day in a row. They managed only four hits in the game, and six Tiger Cubs players were held without a hit.

They also had a rough night on the defensive end for the second straight game, giving up 11 hits.

The Tiger Cubs will be in action again on Saturday when they'll head to Southmont for a doubleheader. North Putnam's next game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m., when the Cougars will host Covington.
