N. Putnam splits match; Greencastle downs Speedway

The North Putnam High School boys' golf team took a split in Tuesday's match at Old Hickory with Southmont and Western Boone.

The Cougars finished second with 163 while Southmont won the event with a 161 and Western Boone finished third with 179.

Patrick Byrd and Austin Malayer led the Cougars, carding a 40 each while J.J. Burns shot a 41 and Eric Whitaker shot a 42.

The junior varsity remains undefeated with its win over Southmont and Western Boone. The Cougars won with a combined score of 189 while the Mounties shot a 192 and the Stars finished in third with a 196.

Stephen Roberts led the Cougars with a 45 while Andy Curry shot a 46 and Jeremy Redman finished with a 46. Kyle Smith rounded out the scoring for the JV with a 52.

The Cougars are back in action today when they travel to South Putnam for a 4:30 p.m. match.

Greencastle defeats Speedway

SPEEDWAY-- Greencastle High School picked up a win in boys golf, defeating Speedway 167-174.

The Tiger Cubs were led by Nick Pritchard's score of 41, while Eric Davis, D.J. Hendrick and Lee Masten all tallied scores of 42.

David Lilly finished with a 44, and Mark Davis shot a 45 on the day.

Sam Hirt chipped in with a score of 46, and Jacob Collins finished the day with a 48.

"We're glad to get the win and be 2-0, but we're not happy at all about how we're playing," Greencastle coach Donovan Wheeler said. "We've under-performed in every event thus far, and we seem to be good at both catching bad breaks and making dumb mistakes that hurt us."

Greencastle will travel to Southmont on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
