Tiger Cubs' season closes

ELLETTSVILLE -- Pitching has been a constant throughout Greencastle's up-and-down high school baseball season.

But the Tiger Cubs didn't have the pitching to stop the Edgewood Mustangs Thursday night.

Edgewood (17-9) pounded out three home runs against three Greencastle hurlers in a 12-1, five-inning, 10-run-rule victory over the Tiger Cubs.

Edgewood now plays No. 5-ranked West Vigo (22-4) in the 3A Sectional 25 championship game at 7 p.m. tonight.

Greencastle finished with a 12-11 record.

"We just gave them too many extra outs and good teams take advantage of them," Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee said.

Greenlee was looking at Greencastle's six fielding errors that kept Erick Burgeson, Austin Miller and Kyle Nobles on the mound longer than necessary.

Edgewood's C.J. Breeden hit a grand slam homer over the 350-foot mark in center field in the six-run second inning.

In the fourth, Michael Lay launched a pitch over the left field fence, and in the fifth, Mitch Walton powered an opposite field shot out right field.

At the plate, Greencastle managed just three hits against Edgewood's Jason Dombrosky. Michael Richardson, Ryan Wilson and Burgeson each had one hit. Freshman Kyle Nobles had the Tiger Cubsā lone run batted in.

"We've struggled, in my opinion, all year to hit," Greenlee said. "Our pitching has been what's saved us all year."

Greencastle scored its only run in the fourth when Burgeson reached base on an error and Wilson singled to right field.

The runners advanced to third and second on a wild pitch. Nobles lifted a long fly ball to center field to score Burgeson.
