Tuesday's match against Center Grove wasn't exactly what the Greencastle varsity boys' tennis team had hoped for, but they know they have nothing to be down about

Tuesday's match against Center Grove wasn't exactly what the Greencastle varsity boys' tennis team had hoped for, but they know they have nothing to be down about.

"You can't really hang your head after this. It's a tough match," Greencastle coach Justin Remmelts said. "We knew this was a really good team. They have nothing to be disappointed about."

The No. 5 ranked Center Grove Trojans defeated Greencastle, 5-0. Although the season came to an end Tuesday, in reflection, the Tiger Cubs accomplished more than any other Greencastle boys' tennis team before them - something Remmelts couldn't speak enough about.

"We had a great season," he said. "We won the first sectional in the history of Greencastle men's tennis and they should be proud of themselves."

The accomplishments, along with the team's general positive attitude, were evident in watching the match, as the Tiger Cubs fought for every point. Even when the match was technically over, players were still encouraging each other, cheering each other on, trying to squeeze every last ounce out of their season.

"We knew coming in here that it would be a real tough match," Remmelts said. "We knew they were top five or six in the state and didn't expect them to give us anything. I was just glad the guys went out and played hard."

Greencastle's No. 1 singles player Quinn Fenlon lost 6-0, 6-2, followed by Johnny Pasho losing at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Sam Hirt fell at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while the No. 1 doubles team of Vance Cross and Brennan Burks lost, 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of David Steen and Seth Heithaus also lost, 6-0, 6-0.

"They earned the right to be out here on the court today, playing these guys so they have no reason to be down on themselves whatsoever," Remmelts said.

The skill and experience of the Center Grove players was apparent from the beginning, as the Trojans were hitting the ball with power, spin and precision. It was too much for most teams. Greencastle hadn't faced such a test this season.

"Getting here and playing this match was just a good experience for these guys," Remmelts said.

Despite losing the match and falling short of a semistate bid, in his first year coaching high school athletics Remmelts had a good experience with his team. As a senior at DePauw he may not be back to coach next year, but said he will take a lot from the experience.

"It was a good experience. It was a lot of fun," Remmelts said. "I learned from these guys. I learned about coaching."
