The West Central Conference boys' championship was decided Thursday on the soccer field at Greencastle.

The Greencastle High School boys' varsity soccer team defeated the visiting Sparkplugs, 2-1, in a long, hard fought 80-minute match.

The first half went nearly scoreless until Eric Davis scored with 4:50 left off of a penalty kick.

After the break, Greencastle came out and went on a shooting rampage, taking several shots on the Sparkplugs' goal, but it was Patrick Eiteljorge who got his shot past the goalie to put the Tiger Cubs up, 2-0, with 35:15 to go in the second half.

The Tiger Cubs held off Speedway until the last second, when one of the players kicked a long ball and got it past Evan Staley for the final goal.

GHS coach Tom Ball had nothing but praise for the new WCC champs after the game.

"I think we did a wonderful job of keeping our composure and not letting their rough play or mouths get to us," he said. "Evan Staley had his best at goal keeper (Thursday) in three years that I have coached him.

"Joel Bottom did a marvelous job for us as sweeper and Patrick was great getting behind every defender every chance he got."

Greencastle finished the regular season 10-4-1 and 3-0 in the WCC, but the Tiger Cubs won't be able to relax long. Greencastle plays in the first game of the Terre Haute North Sectional on Monday, and right now the only thing Ball is worried about is the numbers he'll have for the game.

"Numbers is my biggest concern right now. We have one player out for sure and another on that might be out, both because of injuries and we will have another one out due to a red card being thrown (Thursday," he said. "So right now I don't know who all we will have for the game.

The Tiger Cubs will be back in action on Monday when they take on North Knox in the first game of the Terre Haute North Sectional at 5 p.m.
