The Greencastle Tiger Cub boys' basketball team played its second game of the season at home Saturday night against a powerful Edgewood Mustang team.

Both teams entered the game with identical 1-0 records, but after a hard-fought game that was tied-up with 3:26 left in the game, Edgewood handed Greencastle its first loss of the season, 60-53.

The Mustangs scored the first nine points of the game, leading 9-0 at the 3:39 mark in the first quarter, when Greencastle's Brennan Burks put back an offensive rebound and put the Tiger Cubs on the scoreboard.

Quinn Fenlon, Cal Gard and Erick Burgeson got in on the scoring for Greencastle during the rest of the quarter and the Tiger Cubs trailed 16-8 at the first stop.

Greencastle's unselfish offense continued to function efficiently in the second period, as Zac Remsburg and Michael Richardson joined Burgeson, Burks and Gard in closing Edgewood's lead to four points at halftime, 29-25.

After halftime, the Tiger Cubs' picked up their intensity even more, outscoring the visitors, 11-8 in the third quarter on scoring by Fenlon, Gard, & Brian Troyer. Greencastle only trailed by one, at 37-36, at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

The Tiger Cubs took the lead for the first time in the game at the 6:45 mark of the final period at 39-37 on three-point basket by Remsburg off an assist from Burgeson.

The lead changed hands three more times before Edgewood took the lead for the final time at 52-49 with 3:32 left to play in the game.

The Mustangs were able to hit five-of-six free throws down the stretch to doom the Tiger Cubs hopes of earning their second victory of the season.

In the end Greencastle out shot Edgewood, hitting 57 percent of their two-point shots, 26 percent of their three-point shots, and 82 percent of their free throws.

However, Edgewood out-rebounded Greencastle 26-22, had six more steals and shot 35 free throws compared to 11 for the Tiger Cubs.

Those advantages by the Mustangs turned out to be the difference in the game.

"We knew that Edgewood was bigger than us, but I thought tonight, they were tougher than us," commented Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee after the game.

"I can accept them being bigger than us, but I can't accept that they were tougher than us on the boards. A big factor in the game was that we didn't go after the ball like we should have. We talked a lot before the game about five guys rebounding on the defensive end of the floor, and we didn't do that tonight.

"The kids didn't give up, we've just got to have some guys step up when we need that stop or we need that rebound. We've just got to keep working on getting better and doing the things that we're successful with," Greenlee added.

Greencastle had two players in double figures. Gard led the way with 14 and Burgeson with 10.

Remsburg followed with nine, Troyer had eight, Fenlon scored six, Burks had four and Richardson chipped in two points to close out the Tiger Cub scoring.

Burks had a game-high eight rebounds, Zach Smiley had the only blocked shot of the game, Burgeson and Richardson had game-high three assists each and Remsburg had a game-high four steals.

The Tiger Cubs (1-1) play North Putnam in the second game of the first round of the Putnam County Classic Tournament at McAnally Center Friday night. The game begins 30 minutes after the end of the first game that night between Cloverdale and South Putnam, starting at 6:30 p.m.
