After losing two games in the Brown County Holiday Tourney Thursday and Friday, the Cloverdale girls' basketball team bounced back to defeat Clay City, 51-45, Monday.

Leading the way for the Clovers, sophomore Ashley Koosman scored a game-high 22 points on nine field goals.

"She's leading our team in rebounding right now," Cloverdale Coach Bruce Cook said of Koosman. "She's really emerged as a really good player for us.

Hannah Monnett had 12 and Heather Moon added 10 points for Cloverdale.

Cloverdale was facing a 37-33 deficit after three quarters of play, but managed to outscore the Eels 18-8 in the final period.

"We had talked at halftime about stepping things up a little bit. You could see that we were starting to wear them down," Cook said. "In the second half they started grabbing a lot. We got in the double bonus. That was the difference in the game."

The Clovers hit 10-of-14 free throws in the game, while Clay City hit 4-of-10.

On Thursday, Cloverdale lost to Eminence, 48-28, in the Brown County Tournament. Monnett led the Clovers in scoring with nine points, while Kristen Schroer added four points.

On Friday, Cascade defeated the Clovers, 43-37. Monnett led the Clovers with 22 points, including three three-point field goals.

"Defensively she's really stepping things up," Cook said. "And offensively, that helps her a little bit. We're starting to see glimpses of the player she can be."

Koosman, Schroer and Emily Puffer each added five points for the Clovers.

The Clovers are now 4-7 on the season, and play Thursday at Park Tudor at 7:30 p.m.

"With West Vigo and Park Tudor, we can get back into the swing of things," Cook said. "We're still kind of searching for things. This team is still evolving."
