GHS to face Warriors in semifinal

Thursday, October 26, 2006

Greencastle High School's football team will play its first second-round sectional game in 15 years Friday when it heads to Danville.

The Tiger Cubs (7-3) advanced to the tournament's second round last week with a thrilling 14-9 victory over Brebeuf Jesuit in Indianapolis.

GHS quarterback Cal Gard tossed an 89-yard touchdown pass to Michael Richardson with 21 seconds remaining to overcome a 9-7 deficit.

It marked the second straight game in which the Tiger Cubs came from behind to pick up a win. Greencastle trailed Owen Valley at the half on Oct. 13 and came back to win its sixth game of the season.

As far as what to expect from this week's game, the Tiger Cubs may be in the dark.

Greencastle and Danville have not faced one another in eight years, with the last meeting on Oct. 9, 1998, ending in a 49-15 win for Danville.

Danville (6-4) advanced to Friday's sectional semifinal with a 35-7 victory over the West Vigo Vikings.

Warriors quarterback Colton Cooper was nearly unstoppable in the sectional opener, completing 24-of-34 passes for 278 yards and throwing for three touchdowns.

Cooper also tallied 98 yards rushing and ran the ball into the endzone twice.

On the receiving end, K.C. Woods was a force to be reckoned with for Danville, as he recorded 11 receptions for 175 yards. Of those 11 receptions, two resulted in touchdowns, an 11-yard score in the first quarter and a 60-yard TD catch in the fourth.

Gard's statistics may not have been as dominating as those of his Danville counterpart last week, but he came through when it counted.

The senior, who ranks 13th in the state in yards per game at 194.8, tallied 112 passing yards in the fourth quarter of Greencastle's victory over Brebeuf.

The Tiger Cubs and Warriors will hook up in Danville Friday at 7 p.m.
