DPU beats Centre, Sewanee in field hockey
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The DePauw University field hockey team split a pair of matches this weekend in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships.
The Tigers dropped their semifinal match Saturday against Centre, 3-1.
Centre captured a 1-0 lead with 28:37 to go in the first half on a goal from Taylor Gray, assisted by Maegan Nash.
DePauw knotted the contest at 1-all on a goal from Melissa Davis off an assist from Beth Seegers, but Nash broke the deadlock with just 7:19 to go in the match, and Teresa Johnston added another goal for the Colonels with 5:36 remaining.
Centre outshot the Tigers 6-3, and the Tigers had an 8-5 advantage in corners.
The Tigers avenged their loss Sunday and finished third in the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Sewanee.
Becca Gaines scored both of DePauw's goals, including the game-winning penalty stroke in the first overtime period.
DePauw finished the season at 12-7 while Sewanee ended the year at 4-12.
Lynn Hancock gave Sewanee a 1-0 lead with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half before Gaines tied the score with 3:38 to go in the half on an assist from Meredith Ellis.
Gaines scored on a penalty stroke with 7:43 to go in the first overtime to seal the deal for DePauw.
The Tigers outshot Sewanee 10-3 and had a 13-4 edge in corners.
