Investigation continues into death outside motel

The investigation into the death of a Clay County man in Cloverdale early Wednesday morning is ongoing and officials said it could take up to two weeks to complete.

On Thursday, Putnam County Coroner Thomas Miller told the BannerGraphic that Michael Woodall, 46, Brazil, died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday morning outside of the Days Inn Motel, 1031 N. Main St., Cloverdale.

Early reports stated that Woodall had fallen from a balcony, but Miller disputed that notion Thursday.

"There's no confirmation that he fell from a balcony," Miller said.

Cloverdale Police Chief Charlie Hallam echoed Miller's sentiments Thursday.

"They don't know if he fell or collapsed," Hallam said. "It's still under investigation."

Miller said officials from Cloverdale City Fire Dept., Operation Life, Putnam County Sheriff's Dept., and Cloverdale Police Dept. responded to the scene, where they discovered a man lying on pavement near the 60-room motel.

Upon arrival, officials discovered Woodall on the pavement breathing shallow. He later died at the scene.

"Emergency personnel got there and worked on him, and then (pronounced him dead)," Miller said. "It's still being investigated."

Miller said an autopsy had been performed on Woodall Thursday morning.

"We will not rule on the death until we get the toxicology report," Miller said. "That could take up to two weeks."
