Tiger Shark girls get opening night win
The Greencastle High School girls' swimming team opened its season with a 110-73 victory over North Montgomery Tuesday at home.
The Tiger Sharks posted seven wins in 12 events Tuesday.
"We had a great start to the season (Tuesday)," Greencastle coach Emilie Bowman said. "There were a lot of good races, and girls stepped up when needed."
Morgan Terry secured a win for GHS in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of two minutes, 15.41 seconds. Teammate Jackie Cantonwine, a sophomore, finished third at 2:26.91, and Greencastle freshman Liz Poor was fifth at 2:38.41.
Terry also picked up the win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:54.93, bettering second-place Kelly Thompson of the Chargers by almost 35 seconds.
Melissa Ball claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.56, with fellow Tiger Shark Natasha Aring finishing third at 1:16.85.
Catlin Cannaway was fifth with a time of 1:29.18.
Erica Soster netted a win for Greencastle in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.68, followed in second place by teammate Erika Collins, who finished at the 1:02.54 mark.
Danielle Tesmer finished sixth in the race with a time of 1:14.70.
Soster was second in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing at the 27.29 mark.
Kelsey Murtaugh captured the win in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.02, followed by Cantonwine's second-place finish of 1:10.61.
Murtaugh was second in the 200-yard intermediate race with a time of 2:34.87.
Ashley Smith of the Tiger Sharks finished third with a time of 1:21.45.
Sara Culler was Greencastle's top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke.
She finished second with a time of 1:32.46. Emily McIlrath of North Montgomery claimed the top spot in the race with a time of 1:15.99.
In relay action, Greencastle's team of Murtaugh, Collins, Terry and Soster won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.26.
The Tiger Sharks' team of Ball, Soster, Cantonwine and Murtaugh claimed victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:19.23.
Cantonwine, Terry, Ball and Collins finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:04.69.
The Tiger Sharks did not manage to earn a win in the night's only diving event, as Lainey Poor finished second in the one-meter dive with a final score of 123.75.
Evie Nichols of the Chargers finished first with a 123.75.
Greencastle will be in action again Thursday when it heads to Crawfordsville to face the Athenians at 6:30 p.m.
