Electrical problem at courthouse fixed by Duke

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Pure puzzlement was on the faces of those Putnam County residents attempting to enter the courthouse Monday.

Their faces said it all. "Why was the courthouse closed?"

According to Emergency Management Director Kim Hyten, the courthouse closed at 11:30 a.m. due to an electrical problem that had already shut down the elevator and power to a couple of the floors.

Duke Energy arrived and assessed the situation, informing the courthouse staff that the problem was coming from a main line server underneath Franklin Street.

Angeline Protogere, spokeswoman for Duke Energy, told the BannerGraphic Monday that some of the company's underground equipment failed around 10:30 a.m. leaving parts of the courthouse in the dark. Crews were able to restore all electrical services to the building an hour and half to two hours after the incident took place.

The courthouse re-opened Tuesday morning.
