Coroner reopens 2004 investigation

On Wednesday, the Putnam County Coroner's office announced it has re-opened a two-year-old investigation into the death of a Greencastle man.

Putnam County Coroner Thomas Miller said information into the death of Darrell Covert, 29, Greencastle, has come forward to his office requiring further investigation into the cause and manner of his death.

On Sept. 12, 2004, Covert was found dead in his home, 1001 S. Indiana St., Greencastle. Family members discovered Covert in his home and called 911 for assistance.

Officials from Operation Life, Greencastle Police Dept. and Greencastle Fire Dept. responded to the scene. In addition, detectives from the Putnam County Sheriff's Dept. and Indiana State Police responded.

Covert was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for an autopsy, which was performed on Sept. 13, 2004 by Dr. Randall Kohr, Terre Haute. The results of the autopsy listed the cause of death as acute bronchitis and the manner of death as natural.
