CHS girls drop WCC game to Monrovia

Saturday, December 16, 2006

The Cloverdale varsity girls' basketball team was in action Friday night hoping to get a win over the visiting Monrovia Bulldogs.

But it was the Bulldogs who came out on top, beating the Clovers in a close contest, 48-45.

The game saw both teams start out very slow, with scoring points scarce and turnovers very common in the first quarter. Both teams played solid defense and limited their opponent to very few points as the score at the end of the first quarter was 8-7 in favor of the Clovers.

The second quarter was a different story as the Clovers got into a good rhythm, starting off with a bucket from behind the arc by Chelsie Haltom.

Cloverdale coach Bruce Cook said, " We came out of the gate playing well, scoring 18 pts in the second behind some good defense."

Monrovia put in 11 points in the second quarter but was behind, 26-18, at the half.

The third quarter saw that once-strong defense of the Clovers give up 21 points to the Bulldogs and let them back into the game.

The Clover offense could only put up 13 points in the third allowing the Bulldogs to get back into the game, and the third quarter ended with the two teams knotted at 39.

" Our defense giving up 21 points in the third was a killer for us." said Cook.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle with Monrovia taking its first lead of the game at the 5:45 mark at 42-39, and they would never lose the lead again after that.

The Bulldogs took their biggest lead of the game with 2:00 to go at 47-43, but Cloverdale would stay close and get the score to 48-45 with 46.1 seconds to go in the game.

The Clovers had four shots at tying the game in the final 46 seconds but could not get a shot to fall.

Hannah Monnett and Heather Moon both scored 12 points for CHS.

Cloverdale will play again Dec. 28 at the Brown County Classic.
