Panthers pounce on Clovers

Saturday, January 6, 2007

The Cloverdale High School girls' basketball team dropped its second straight game Thursday at home against Park Tudor.

The Clovers fell to 6-7 on the season with a 10-point loss to the Panthers, 49-39.

CHS opened the first quarter by building a 13-8 lead over Park Tudor, but the tide quickly turned, as the Panthers embarked on a 25-5 run stretching into the second quarter.

"We came out, and we were up at the beginning of the game, and I thought we were playing really well," Cloverdale coach Bruce Cook said. "Then all of a sudden they went on that run, and we just got down."

The Panthers outscored Cloverdale, 17-5, in the second quarter and headed into the halftime break with a 33-18 lead.

Hannah Monnett, the Clovers' leading scorer this season, was held scoreless in the second period and ended the first half with just five points.

Chelsie Haltom and Kristin McCammon posted the only scores for the Clovers in the second quarter, as Haltom drained one of her three three-point baskets in the game and McCammon connected on a two-point bucket.

"That run really killed us," Cook said. "I think we settled a lot for the outside shot (in the second quarter). We weren't able to get anything on the inside, and we were just settling for the outside shot."

Cloverdale managed to outscore the Panthers in the second half, 21-16, but it was too little too late, as Park Tudor was able to hold on for the win.

Monnett had 12 points for Cloverdale, and Chelsie Haltom scored nine, all on three-pointers.

"Chelsie did a good job again of handling the ball and recognizing defenses," Cook said. "She gets things started for us. I just think she's probably the best piont guard we've had since Tabby Doughty. She's just a good point guard for us, and I've always thought everything starts from that position."

Cook said that the Park Tudor run was not the only factor that sank the Clovers in Thursday's game.

He added that the height of the Panthers was a major obstacle for his squad.

"They're probably the tallest team that we'll play this year," Cook said. "That gave us some problems. They played the zone, and I think physically we just didn't match up with them."

In junior varsity action, the Clovers picked up a 42-32 victory.

Cloverdale will be in action again Monday at home when it hosts the West Vigo Vikings for a 6 p.m. junior varsity start.
