SPHS splits with Chargers

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

The South Putnam boys' and girls' varsity swim teams faced the North Montgomery Chargers Monday night at home, with the boys' squad defeating the Chargers 106-77, while the girls lost to the Chargers 116-65.

Although the boys squad led from the early moments, coach Joe Condon thought his swimmers could be showing signs of fatigue.

"We didn't swim as well as we could have. It could be from Saturday," Condon said after the meet referring to the WCC championship.

South got started early on in the 200 medley relay where they finished in second and third place. In the next event, Chris Smiley finished first in the 200 free, with a time of 2:06.94, to give South the lead in the meet and set it on pace for the overall victory.

South continued to swim strong all evening as it had swimmers finishing in the top three places for the remainder of the events.

The Eagles recorded firsts in the 50 free by Clark Becker in a time of 2:41.7. Becker also won the 100 free with a time of 56.78 The diving event was won by Jon Weaver with a six-dive total of 162.1.

The 100 butterfly was won by Cory McCallie with a time of 1:04.88 while Loren Ashcraft, in a time of 1:12.;33, captured the 100 backstroke. The final victory of the night came when Brice Johnson won the 100 breaststroke, finishing almost four seconds ahead of second place, with a time of 1:13.41.

The Eagles closed their night with a second-place in the 400 free relay. The relay team of Heath Pruitt, Smiley, Becker, and McCallie battled for first place the entire event until settling in to second place to close the book on the Chargers.

On the other side, Condon knew it would be a tough fight for the Eagles girls squad going against a very good North Montgomery.

"I knew the girls were going to be good," Condon said. "I think our times fell off a little bit."

South could only manage to gain first place finishes in only three events on the evening, despite hard swimming and determined attitudes.

The first victory came in the 200 free as Laura Manninen finished ahead of the pack with a time of 2:13.91. Manninen didn't stop there. She dominated the 500 free, finishing almost 40 full seconds ahead of second place.

The Eagles only other victory came in diving when Shelby Johnston finished in front with a six-dive total of 171.9. Johnston combined smooth power with timely dives to get the win over North Mongomery's Evie Nichols.

South Putnam will next be in action Tuesday as they travel to Cascade at 5:30 p.m.
