Area 30's adult classes to resume

Thursday, January 18, 2007

After a five-year absence, the Area 30 Career Center will begin offering non-credit adult education classes again this year.

The new classes on the roster are Beginning Computer Skills, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and Intro to Culinary Arts. Each one has a small fee, but the classes offer a wealth of knowledge to those eager to learn.

Area 30 Assistant Director Lora Wood said the need for classes arose after several citizens called and asked about the non-credit adult education classes that the center used to offer. After listening to the citizen's needs, she said she felt obligated to try to start the program again.

"Area 30 has not offered adult non-credit classes for about the last five years and we are kind of starting over from scratch here," Wood said.

The Beginning Com-puter Skills classes are $60 and according to the brochure "will include a basic overview of Windows XP, Outlook 2003, Internet Explorer, Word 2003, and Excel 2003."

The computer class will have six sessions from 5-6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from March 6-22.

"A lot of senior citizens in Putnam County seem to have enrolled so far," Wood said. "The program will allow adults to become comfortable with their computers."

The CNA classes are ideal for those who are looking at starting a career in assisted living or long-term care facilities. There will be 10 sessions of CNA classes from 6-9 p.m. Monday and Thursday nights from Feb. 5 to March 8. The fee for these classes is $200.

"Intro to Culinary Arts," Wood said, "is for people who enjoy food preparation, design of food, garnishing and are looking to hone their skills they already have or generate new ones."

These classes will be offered on April 5, 12 and 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at a cost of $60. The three sessions will focus on an introduction to knife skills and garnishing, bread baking and basic cake decorating, according to the brochure.

"We want to continue to add more non-credit adult education classes for the community and hope that these will be successful," Wood said.
