On Friday night, the South Putnam Eagles girls' varsity basketball team hosted West Central Conference rival Monrovia in the opening game of a boy-girl doubleheader.

South Putnam was hoping to get a win in an evenly matched game, but the Eagles lost their shooting touch in the final four minutes of the third quarter, and Monrovia handed the home team a 33-27 loss.

Both teams scored the same amount of points in each quarter, except the third, when the Bulldogs outscored the Eagles, 16-10, and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

South Putnam hit 75 percent of their free throws in the game, 20-15, and outrebounded Monrovia, 29-21, but could not overcome hitting only 17 percent of their field goals.

"I thought we played well defensively tonight," commented South Putnam coach Debbie Steffy after the game. "Holding them to 33 points was a really good job by our girls, but that was probably our demise in the second half. We exerted so much energy and we had people really doing a good job, so I didn't want to take them out of the game.

"Late in the third quarter, we gave up some easy baskets. Other than that, we played them evenly the whole night," Steffy added.

South Putnam was led in scoring by Meghan Canary with eight. Bailey Birt followed with seven, Samantha Stanifer and CJ Searles scored four points each, Oceaia Boetjer added three, and Megan Robinson closed out the Eagle scoring with one point.

Stanifer pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, Canary grabbed seven, Birt had six, and Searles had five boards, and Canary had two steals.

The Eagles host the Eminence Eels Thursday night. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m.
