Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Nationally-known Abra-ham Lincoln impersonator B.F. McClerren and his wife Dorothy will address the crowd at Putnam County's annual Lincoln Day Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 11.

The event, hosted by the Putnam County Republican Party, will be conducted from 2-4:30 p.m. at the DePauw University Student Union.

The Illinois-based McCler-rens will be in Putnam County Feb. 11 and 12, making an appearance at North Putnam Middle School, Greencastle Middle School and South Putnam Junior High on Feb. 12.

On Feb. 11, the McClerrens, playing Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, will present a one-hour program at the Lincoln Day Observance. The scene they will portray occurred on April 14, 1865, the day the Lincolns were to attend the play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.

McClerren is a retired professor from Eastern Illinois University and has been portraying the former president for 15 years. In 1994, McClerren was chosen to portray Abraham Lincoln in C-SPAN's reenactment of the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debate at Charleston, Ill.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25 per person and include a buffet brunch. Tickets can be bought at the law office of Robert Perry and Karen Temple on the north side of the courthouse square in Greencastle.

The visits to the schools on Feb. 12 will be sponsored by the Putnam County Republican Party.
