North Putnam earns victory over GHS

Friday, January 26, 2007

The North Putnam girls' basketball team defeated Greencastle, 48-32, during homecoming night festivities.

North let the Tiger Cubs stay close early on but steadily pulled away as the game progressed. Carlye McGaughey and Brook Miller accounted for all of North's first quarter points.

Greencastle struggled from the floor all night, shooting 32 percent from the floor. The charity stripe was no more kind, as they shot 38 percent.

The Cougars stayed in front as McGaughey hit a three-pointer and Chelsea Greene stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for the bucket. North continued to play solid and went into halftime with a 20-19 advantage.

The second half was more of the same, as the Cougars lead began to grow and their dominating defense held Greencastle scoreless in the third quarter. This marks the second consecutive game that the Cougars have held their opponents scoreless in the third quarter.

"Our girls are really excited about that," coach Kevin Smith said.

Miller scored for North after receiving a court-length pass to put to Cougars ahead, 26-19, at the 2:02 mark.

The fourth quarter saw North open up a bigger lead as Taylor Alles and Shawna Johnston hit timely buckets.

North went on a run at the end of the game with Miller and Green hitting three-pointers to close the game out.

The second quarter saw North switch to a man-to-man to change things up and Smith thought it worked for the Cougars.

"The second half we thought we did a better job rebounding. We tried not to let them be too comfortable," Smith said.

Smith also commended his bench players for coming out and giving quality minutes.

"Dakota Malayer gave us four and a half minutes of great varsity basketball."

North will host Speedway next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
