Putnamville facility helps families with fuel needs

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

The Putnamville Correctional Facility has provided low income families affordable heat during winter months.

During the past three months, the facility received 32 orders, totaling 251 ricks of wood, from the Western Indiana Comm-unity Action Agency. Approximately 15 offenders, assigned to one of the Facility's Outside Ground Maintenance Crews, cut, split, hauled, and, stacked wood at the homes of residents in Clay, Putnam and Vigo counties. The proceeds from the sale are used to purchase equipment for and to operate farm projects.

The farm operations afford offenders an opportunity to learn new skills during incarceration. Al C. Parke, Superintendent of the Putnamville Correctional Facility, states, "The offenders take pride in knowing that their hard work and effort will result in keeping families warm this time of year."

"I applaud the resourcefulness and community mindedness of staff in the field. The Department is committed to promoting innovative ways to engage staff and offenders to assist those in need in our communities," J. David Donahue, Indiana Department of Correction.
