Major Robert S. Baldwin, 79, Terre Haute, died Saturday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Born in Clinton, he was the son of Edna Mae (Sylvester) and Claude Freeman Baldwin.

He was a retired bacteriologist with IMC with 39 years of service. He was a 1945 graduate of Mecca High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and later served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a member of the 604th Military Police in Terre Haute and the American Legion in Riley.

He married Janet N. Baldwin who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Candiss B. Perrill and husband Randall, Columbia, S.C., and Kathy Auten and husband John, Muncie; three sons, John R. Baldwin and wife Billie, Martinsville, Mark S. Baldwin and wife Patricia, Bainbridge, and Chauncey D. Baldwin and wife Pamela A., Crystal Lake, Ill; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a niece and a cousin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Worrell and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gooch Funeral Home, Rockville, with Chaplin John Schmeling officiating. Military rites will follow.

Inurnment will occur at a later date at Montezuma's Oakland Cemetery.
