CLAYTON -- The Cloverdale girls' varsity basketball team entered postseason play with a target on its back, sporting the best overall record.

The Clovers managed to draw Monrovia in the first round and faced the Bulldogs Thursday at the Class 2A Cascade Sectional, falling 61-52.

Monrovia handed Cloverdale its only West Central Conference loss earlier this season, 48-45.

The game was a battle from beginning to end, with momentum swings taking place numerous times during the game

The game turned out to be a tale of two halves.

Cloverdale overpowered Monrovia in the first half, outscoring the Bulldogs, 28-17, before halftime, but the game changed in the third quarter.

Monrovia went to a full court defense that caused fits for the Clovers.

In the second half, the Bulldogs' press forced the Clovers to commit 12 turnovers, while Monrovia was able to outscore Cloverdale 44-24 in the final two quarters of the game.

The Clovers were able to outshoot the Bulldogs, hitting 43 percent of their shots from the field, compared to 36 percent for Monrovia, but Cloverdale's turnovers against the press turned out to be the difference in the game.

"It's always tough to lose in the tournament when you enter on a seven-game win streak and you think you're playing well, and you get through a half, and you think you're playing well," commented Cloverdale coach Bruce Cook after the game. "We came out in the second half and played hard, but their press killed us.

"They were a totally different team in the second half. This will be one we second guess for a few weeks," Cook added.

Cloverdale had two players scoring in double figures, with Hannah Monnett leading the way with 17 and Chelsie Haltom with 11.

Elizabeth Cheatham scored eight points, Heather Moon added six, Ashley Koosman had five, Kristin McCammon score three, and Kristen Schroer closed out the Clovers scoring with two points.

Cheatham grabbed five rebounds, and Monnett and Moon pulled down four rebounds each.

Koosman, Monnett, and Cheatham had four, three, and two assists respectively, and Monnett had a game-high four steals.

The Clovers ended the year with a season record of 13-8, and a West Central Conference record of 5-1, and this was the final game for seniors Hannah Monnett and Heather Moon.
